The request arrived as a sudden, unwelcome blow. "Gregory Miller wants to be your friend." Sarah felt a jolt of shock, and her pulse quickened. Greg Miller. The boy who used to hide her glasses and then laugh when she couldn't find them.

A flush crept up her neck, reaching her ears. She felt a familiar tightness in her chest, a phantom pressure that mirrored the fear she'd felt as a child. She had not thought of him for years.

She looked at the notification again, a slow, deliberate assessment of her situation. She closed the browser, and went out and sat in her backyard. She focused on the birds. She focused on the trees.
