The promotion announcement was the final straw. David had been passed over, again. And now, he found out that the person who received it, Susan, was making more than he was before the promotion. His own career had stalled. His stomach churned.

He sat at his desk, staring blankly at his computer screen. The lines of code swam before his eyes. He felt a suffocating sense of helplessness. His hands started to tremble, and he quickly closed his eyes.

He knew he should speak to someone, his manager, his wife, anyone. But the words wouldn't come. He spent the rest of the day in a daze, the weight of his perceived failure pressing down on him.
