"Ignore it," Sarah muttered under her breath. She stared fixedly at a collection of chipped teacups, avoiding the gaze of the woman running the yard sale. A quick glance revealed the object of her sudden discomfort: Mr. Snuggles. He was sprawled awkwardly on a blanket, his fur matted and one ear missing.

Her fingers danced nervously across a chipped saucer, tracing the delicate floral pattern. She'd driven past this yard sale, she’d even considered skipping it. Now here she was, rooted to the spot, feeling as though everyone could see the secret she was trying to keep.

"That's a steal, love," the woman’s voice broke through her thoughts. Sarah flinched. She hadn't realized she was staring so intently.
