"Well, this is just great," Maya muttered, staring at the screen. The carefully curated image she'd built of herself, the perfect daughter, the devoted granddaughter, felt like a house of cards about to collapse. She felt her face flush, burning from the inside. She wanted to scream, to lash out at the sterile white walls of her apartment. She’d meticulously planned everything: her career, her relationships, her family history. Now, it was all a lie. She wanted to throw the phone across the room, but the thought of the shards scattered everywhere made her reconsider. Instead, she sat frozen in place, a tiny tremor running through her hands.
