He’d always felt a disconnect, a vague sense of not belonging. Now, the email confirmed it. Michael wandered into the backyard, kicking at a loose stone. The familiar scent of freshly cut grass, which he used to find comforting, now seemed cloying and artificial. He looked at the house, the walls that had once felt solid and secure, and thought of his entire childhood as a charade. He felt a strange tingling sensation, like his skin wasn't his own. He wanted to yell, to rage, to tear everything apart. But instead, he just stood there, frozen, staring at the empty swing set.
