He didn't want to be here, but his daughter had insisted. "It's a part of you, Dad," she'd said. Now, he regretted it. He felt the blood rush to his face, a burning sensation he couldn't control. He was standing there, in his ill-fitting clothes, surrounded by strangers.

The foreman gave him a curt nod, then turned back to his work. He wanted to scream. He was too old for this. He felt a knot in his chest. He wished he had stayed at home, but he had been caught by the sight of the house itself. The way it was being torn apart.

He focused on the ground. He had to be strong. He had to. He wanted to cry.
