The invitation felt heavy in Maya’s hand. Sarah’s glitter-bombed design, complete with a cartoon of Sarah herself, was a stark contrast to Maya’s own understated, minimalist invites. She’d meticulously planned her garden party for Saturday, assuming that she and Sarah, as usual, would be celebrating their birthdays together. Now this… this was a whole different scene. Her cheeks burned.

She had to see Sarah. She found her in the art studio, working on a canvas splattered with neon colors. “Hey,” Maya stammered, “About the… party.” She fiddled with the strap of her bag. Sarah turned, a wide grin plastered on her face.

“It's going to be epic!” Sarah exclaimed, oblivious. Maya forced a smile, her stomach twisting into knots. She mumbled something about double-booking and quickly retreated, feeling the heat creep up her neck.
