The crisp autumn air seemed to mock Clara as she walked out of the gleaming glass doors of "Serendipity Books." The rejection letter, tucked into her handbag, felt like a lead weight. She hugged the bag to her chest, as if it could somehow shield her from the world's gaze. The vibrant bookstore window display, usually a source of joy, now felt like a taunt, showcasing the very success she craved. She’d spent months, years even, pouring her heart into this novel.

Her cheeks burned. She pulled her scarf tighter, hiding her face. She hated how much she cared, how much this meant to her. She pictured the editor’s face, the polite smile, the carefully chosen words – "Not quite right for our current list." She pictured her friends' reactions, their well-meaning sympathy. The thought made her want to disappear.
