The musty scent of the storage unit made Liam’s nose itch. He'd found the letter tucked between his father's old baseball glove and a box of dusty trophies. It was a letter of resignation from the police force. Liam had always known his dad was a cop, but he hadn't known he'd quit.

He swallowed hard, the muscles in his jaw clenching. He stared out the open door, at the dull grey of the storage unit walls. Why was he only just finding this out now? He read the short sentences again, each word seemingly mocking. The reasons were vague, referencing "ethical conflicts." He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. He quickly crumpled the paper, throwing it back into the dusty box.
