He picked up the phone, and his knuckles went white. “Hello?” His voice was tight, strained. He heard a familiar voice on the other end, one he hadn’t heard in years. Then the voice said, “I'm so sorry.” The call was a formal apology for something that had happened a long time ago.

Michael’s voice, a little older now, poured out a tale of regret. He was apologizing for the hurtful words he'd spoken at graduation, the cutting remarks that had caused such pain. Liam, sitting on his bed, felt his pulse quicken. He gripped the phone harder, his jaw clenched, and listened. Afterwards, he hung up, suddenly very aware of the way his heart hammered against his ribs.
