The memory card was almost full, so Maya had decided to come back to the spot of her childhood. She'd planned to take a picture of the giant, majestic willow that she'd planted with her father. She arrived, camera in hand, expecting to capture its iconic image. All she found was a pile of wood and a scattering of mulch.

She let out a short, involuntary gasp. She stood there, frozen. Her fingers tightened around the camera. She abruptly decided to take a picture of the neighbor’s cat instead, then quickly headed back to the car. She fiddled with the radio, a cacophony of static filling the silence as she pulled away.
