The elevator doors opened onto the seventh floor, and she nearly bolted back inside. Her cheeks were hot, and she felt a ridiculous urge to hide. She clutched the file containing her session notes a little tighter. The hallway seemed to stretch for miles, leading her to the very person she’d spent years actively avoiding.

She found his office, a discreet nameplate reading "Dr. David Miller, Licensed Therapist." She took a deep breath, trying to slow her rapid heartbeat. A flicker of a memory, his laughter echoing across the playground, made her want to disappear.

He opened the door before she could knock. "Come in, Sarah! So good to finally meet you." He had a calming voice, even. She wanted to scream.
