Michael stared at the statement on his phone, the numbers blurring. A savings account, in his wife, Lisa's, maiden name. He felt a strange tingling in his fingertips. He'd confided in her about his gambling debts. He'd been vulnerable. And she'd... concealed this.

He thought of all the times he'd asked for a small loan, only to be met with hesitation. He recalled the tight-lipped smiles, the carefully worded excuses. He felt a sharp pang, a hollowness in his chest. The expensive coffee he’d just made seemed to lose its appeal, the aroma suddenly unwelcome. He needed to get away from the phone.
