A cold dread coiled in David's gut as the announcement flashed across the campus screens. "Due to unforeseen circumstances..." The blood drained from his face. He'd poured his heart and soul into the university's debate team. Now, all that effort seemed ludicrous.

He saw Sarah, his rival, across the quad, her mouth tilted in a slight, almost imperceptible smirk. He immediately looked away, pulling his jacket tighter. The wind felt suddenly frigid.

He ducked into the cafeteria, the familiar smell of stale pizza and coffee now nauseating. He wanted to melt into the floor, to vanish. He found an empty table in the back and stared blankly at a crumpled napkin.
