The words on the page blurred. Liam had the audacity to write about their breakup, down to the tear-stained tissues and the slammed door. Chloe wanted the earth to swallow her whole. The fictional Chloe, in Liam's words, was weak and overly dramatic.

Her stomach churned, and she wanted nothing more than to erase his manuscript from existence, as if that would erase the memories from her own mind. The way he’d described her, it was as if she were a character in a bad play, and she was the only one who didn’t know the script.

She found him in the garden, pruning roses. “Is this some kind of joke?” she asked, her voice tight, the words barely audible. His smile faded, and the clippers dropped from his hand.
