A wave of heat flushed through Mark’s face as he read the email. Condo conversion. He stared at the screen, the words blurring. His gaze darted to the overflowing recycling bin in the corner, the mountain of pizza boxes and empty beer cans a monument to his bachelor lifestyle.

He'd always prided himself on his laid-back approach to life. Now he thought about the inspection. The impending scrutiny made him fidget in his chair. He envisioned the sharp-dressed buyers wandering through his place, their noses wrinkled at the smell of old gym socks.

His jaw clenched. He’d barely cleaned the bathroom in six months. A cold sweat beaded on his forehead as he imagined what he would have to do to make it presentable.
