The jackhammer sounded like a mechanical beast, devouring the quiet. From his porch, David watched as the new neighbors ripped up their driveway. He winced, remembering his own struggles after a similar project. The long days, the unexpected setbacks, the sheer frustration of it all.

He knew they had two young children. He imagined them, cooped up inside, enduring the noise and upheaval. He thought of his own kids at that age.

Later that afternoon, he walked over, carrying a bag of individually wrapped snacks and a couple of coloring books. "For the little ones," he offered, gesturing towards the construction zone. He smiled, a genuine smile, despite the noise.
