Maya slumped onto the cracked bench outside the financial aid office, the rejection letter clutched in her trembling hand. The afternoon sun, usually a source of warmth, felt like an accusing spotlight. She imagined the other students inside, chatting, laughing, oblivious to the hollow ache spreading through her chest. She wished she could disappear.

Her gaze drifted to a young woman pushing a baby stroller, her face etched with the weariness that Maya recognized. A sense of shared struggle washed over her. Maya understood the pressure, the constant worry, the unspoken sacrifices. She could almost taste the bitterness of it.

She dug into her backpack, pulling out the half-eaten granola bar she'd planned to save for later. It felt wrong to eat it now, somehow. With a sigh, she got to her feet, walked toward the woman, and offered the snack. "It's… it's not much," she stammered, “but maybe it will help."
