The news sliced through Ava like a shard of ice. The dream she had nurtured, the meticulous plans, all shattered in an instant. The crushing disappointment left her feeling numb, empty. The world around her seemed to become muted, less vibrant.

She overheard a conversation between two wealthy classmates, casually discussing their upcoming European vacations, paid for by their families. She felt a sharp, bitter pang. But the resentment quickly morphed into a different feeling.

Later, as she walked past the campus homeless shelter, she saw a student she knew, volunteering. Ava, without a word, joined the student and started helping. The work was exhausting, but it felt right.
