“So, you’re back,” her father said, his voice clipped. The words stung, but she knew the tone was a defense mechanism. He was always like this, hiding his emotions behind a facade of stoicism.

She saw the quick flash of concern in his eyes before he looked away, pretending to examine the dust on the mantelpiece. She knew he was worried about her, about her failed marriage, about the future. His posture betrayed him, his shoulders were slumped as he stood in the doorway.

“It's…good to be back,” she mumbled, avoiding his gaze. She knew he was trying to understand, trying to make sense of the sudden change in their family dynamic. A wave of regret hit her, understanding how her presence might be upsetting the rhythm of their life. She wanted to say something, anything, to alleviate his unease, but the words wouldn't come. She saw his hands clench. She realised that he, too, was struggling.
