The air in the break room felt thick, suffocating. They’d both applied for the project lead position, and now they were both waiting for the announcement. Across from her, Ben looked pale, his usually boisterous energy subdued.

She remembered his dedication, the long hours he’d spent poring over the project proposals. He was skilled, a natural leader. He was also her friend.

The office manager called his name. Ben stood, his face a mask of apprehension. He walked out, and she saw the relief in his posture. He’d gotten it. Good. He deserved this.
