John sat by the window, the cold glass pressed against his forehead. He had seen the phone, heard the secretive conversations, and the crushing reality had finally settled in. His gut twisted with a sharp bite of grief, not just for himself, but for her, too. He imagined the pain she must be experiencing, the need that drove her to these secret calls. He felt a deep longing to help, to somehow ease the burden she was carrying. The world outside the window blurred, a swirling canvas of grey, reflecting the storm brewing inside of him.
