Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stood in the empty locker room, the sound of the team’s celebration echoing in the hallway outside. He’d failed to make the cut for the climbing team. Years of rigorous training, the pain of the falls, the calluses on his hands, all seemed to have been for naught. The initial sting of his disappointment was overwhelming, but then a different feeling arose. He imagined his competitors, the years of work and the anticipation they’d had. He thought of the heights they would reach.

He carefully packed his gear, and, taking a deep breath, he walked outside and joined the celebration, offering his congratulations.
