“Gary Stevens wants to be your friend.” John’s pulse quickened. Gary. The big, tough kid who’d made his life a misery. The name still brought a flash of anger. He recalled the humiliation, the fear. He remembered the physical pain.

But John also remembered the stories his own father had told him of his childhood. He had made a lot of mistakes back then. He knew what it was like to be lost. He scrolled through Gary's photos. Gary had lost a lot of weight. He looked older, maybe a little sad. John felt a strange pull.

He accepted the request. He messaged Gary. "Hey, Gary. Long time." He felt a quiet resignation, an acceptance of the past, and a tentative hope for the future.
