A lump formed in Leo's throat as he stared at the email: "Surprise cancelled. Due to unforeseen circumstances..." His jaw tightened. He'd poured his heart into organizing Ben's party - a gathering for Ben's promotion, a celebration he knew would mean the world to his friend.

He scrolled through the guest list, each name a tiny spark of joy he'd carefully cultivated. He imagined Ben’s reaction, the way his shoulders would slump with the realization. Leo bit his lip. He could sense the sting of disappointment, a familiar pang.
