The news hit Carol like a physical blow. The pay scale document, which had been accidentally circulated, showed that Kevin, who had only been with the company for a year, was making significantly more. Carol, who had worked for the company for over a decade, felt a familiar wave of disappointment.

She considered the implications – her own career progression, her financial security. Then, a softer feeling took hold. She remembered Kevin’s genuine excitement about his work, his eagerness to learn from everyone. He'd never complained, had always been so eager to help out.
