From the corner of his eye, Chef David saw the wait staff huddled together, their faces etched with concern. The critic’s words were sharp, and the restaurant was nearly deserted. He felt a deep pang of pain for them; they relied on the tips.

He knew he needed to make a move. He didn't want the staff to have to absorb this blow. He walked towards them with a deliberate stride. He cleared his throat. “Listen,” he began, his voice steady but kind. “We’ve all been there. It stings. But it doesn’t define us. We’ll get through this.”

He then started running the evening specials, and had the kitchen prepare a new drink the wait staff could offer to patrons. He wanted to make them feel useful. He made a point of making eye contact with everyone.
