The critic’s words burned in Chef Julian’s mind. He had poured his heart and soul into his restaurant, and the review felt like a betrayal. He felt his face flush with anger. The words stung.

He retreated to the back, seeking solace in the clatter of the kitchen. He saw Maria, the sous chef, working tirelessly, the pressure mounting. Maria seemed to have absorbed this blow. He knew Maria’s family depended on her paycheck. He knew how important this was to her.

He walked over to her, his voice low. "Maria, take a break. Go get some fresh air. Then come back and let’s figure this out.” He went over to the cooking station and began to start the evening's prep work.
