Gemotions

The musty air hit Maya like a physical blow as she crouched in the crawl space. Dust motes danced in the single beam of her flashlight, illuminating cobwebs and forgotten tools. It was then she saw it – a barely perceptible seam in the far wall, masked by peeling wallpaper. She ran a trembling hand along the surface, and felt the outline of a door.

Her heart hammered against her ribs as she pushed against it, finding a hidden room beyond. It was small, no bigger than a walk-in closet, but filled with a peculiar collection of items: a child’s worn teddy bear, a stack of letters tied with a faded ribbon, and a single, dried rose in a chipped vase. Maya’s breath caught in her throat.

She gently picked up the teddy bear. Its button eyes seemed to stare back at her with a silent plea. Maya instinctively reached out and stroked its matted fur. “You’ve been waiting a long time,” she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
