The invitation lay on the counter, a silent accusation. John didn't want to attend the reunion. He dreaded the small talk, the forced smiles, the inevitable comparisons. A strange feeling settled in his stomach.

He remembered the vulnerable girl he used to be, the one who felt like an outsider. He felt a wave of warmth thinking of all the people, the others, and the burdens they had probably carried. He wished they all could somehow know they were not alone.

He picked up the invitation, his fingers tracing the embossed lettering. Maybe he could make someone feel less alone.
