He watched his sister, Sarah, staring at the tarnished silver locket. It was their mother's, and she had always worn it. The realization that she was selling it struck him like a physical blow. A knot formed in his stomach.

The air in the sunlit kitchen seemed to thicken, pressing down on him. He saw the faint lines of stress around Sarah’s eyes, a mirrored reflection of the exhaustion he felt himself.

“That locket… it’s special,” he finally managed, his voice hushed. He could practically feel the ache in his sister’s heart.

Sarah nodded, her gaze fixed on the intricate carving. "I know, Michael. But rent is due." She closed her eyes briefly, then opened them again, the pain stark and raw.
