The sun beat down on Leo’s face, but he didn’t feel the warmth. He felt a chill, a deep, pervasive cold that settled in his bones. The house, his childhood sanctuary, was being demolished. He felt a deep connection with the structure, its walls, its rooms, its history.

He picked up a loose brick from the ground, its familiar weight a comfort. He recalled climbing trees in the backyard, playing hide-and-seek with his siblings, the annual Christmas gatherings.

He held the brick close to his chest, as if trying to shield it from harm. The demolition continued, the sounds of destruction echoing in his ears. He felt like he was losing a part of himself.

He knew that the memories, the moments, the echoes of his past, would soon be replaced with something new, unrecognizable. He hated that.
