“Well, that’s that,” the lawyer said, his voice clipped. “Your self-charging phone case is, unfortunately, already patented.” Maya’s breath hitched. She had envisioned the joy of constant connectivity, the freedom from the tyranny of the charging cable. The endless need for power had always bothered her.

She had spent countless nights hunched over circuit boards, fueled by coffee and a burning desire to liberate people from the mundane. She'd wanted to empower everyone, make life a little easier. Now, the realization crashed over her.

She excused herself from the room, needing air. Standing outside, she closed her eyes, picturing the faces of those who could have benefited from her invention.
