"It's just… disappointing," Sarah mumbled, pushing the plate of untouched pasta around her table. Across from her, her friend, Mark, offered a sympathetic nod. The subject was the scandalous revelation about Jasper Thorne, the author whose prose had consistently pulled her through difficult phases.

Sarah remembered the excitement she felt when she first encountered Thorne’s work. She recalled the sense of connection, the feeling that someone understood her. The discovery was like the world had lost a little bit of its colour.
