Gemotions

The letter arrived on a Tuesday. The subject line was succinct: “Scholarship Adjustment.” His breath hitched as he opened it, and read the cold, clinical language detailing the error. The scholarship, the financial safety net he had come to rely on, wasn’t his to begin with. He felt a deep, twisting ache in his chest. He imagined someone, somewhere, who had hoped and waited and deserved this.

He wandered the campus, avoiding eye contact, feeling the weight of the lie he had been living. The laughter of other students grated on his nerves. He felt exposed, ashamed. The beautiful weather offered no comfort, only served to highlight his internal turmoil.

He sought out the university's financial aid office, hoping to learn more about the other applicant. The office, however, was unable to provide that information. But they gave him some phone numbers to reach out to other scholarship programs, and he began making calls, advocating for a second chance for someone.
