The tiny, shivering kitten, abandoned in a cardboard box behind the building, mewled pathetically. Sarah’s roommate, Mark, a staunch advocate for a minimalist lifestyle, was vehemently against the idea of a pet. "It's a huge commitment, Sarah," he'd said, his voice tight.

Sarah knelt, her hand outstretched, offering a tentative touch to the creature’s matted fur. The kitten flinched, then, sensing gentleness, nudged its head against her fingers.

She thought of the raw, exposed feeling of being alone. She saw the kitten’s need reflected in the rain-streaked window. “Just for a little while, Mark?” she pleaded, her voice barely a whisper. “Until we find it a good home?”
