The fluffy, bouncing puppy in the shelter, all big, hopeful eyes, tugged at Lena's heartstrings. Her roommate, Chris, was adamant: "We're never home. It's cruel." Lena knew he was right. Their work schedules were brutal.

She watched the puppy, full of life, wagging its tail against the bars of its cage. She pictured the long days the dog would spend alone.

She remembered her childhood dog, left behind when her family moved. The guilt still lingered. "You're right," she said quietly, turning away. "It wouldn't be fair."
