The vibrant colours of the circus-themed decorations felt dull against Clara’s mood. Her friend, Finn, had planned a carnival celebration, complete with games, rides, and food stalls. Clara, in comparison, had arranged a picnic in the park. She felt a prickle of something close to despair at the juxtaposition.

She envisioned Finn, buzzing with excitement, surrounded by the infectious energy of the carnival. Her own picnic, with its quiet blankets and peaceful atmosphere, seemed…lame.

Clara fidgeted, her fingers tracing the invitations she had sent out. She pictured the disappointment etched on the faces of her guests if she cancelled.
