The letter lay open on her desk, a judgment passed. The rejection from the publisher, the one who had helped launch so many careers. Sarah felt a peculiar ache, a dull throb in her temples. She knew, somewhere deep down, that she wasn't alone. She tried to imagine the editor, a real person, sifting through hundreds of manuscripts, struggling to meet deadlines.

She glanced at the photograph of her sister on her desk. She knew her sister had been going through a rough patch, recently. Without further thought, she grabbed her phone and texted her, asking if she wanted to go for a walk. She imagined the editor's day ahead, the endless emails and the weighty decisions.
