Gemotions

The sun streaming through the dusty window illuminated the collection of photographs. John studied the pictures, each one a window into the past. One particular photo showed his stern great-grandfather, a man remembered for his rigid discipline, laughing wholeheartedly with a group of friends in a lively bar. The stories of his youth had been carefully curated, filled with tales of hard work and responsibility, not with anything jovial.

John felt a surprising swell of emotion, a feeling of connection he had never expected. He could almost hear the laughter, feel the camaraderie. He imagined the man's younger self, the freedom he must have felt.

He gently placed the photograph back in the box. He felt the need to share this, to see how his parents would react to the "new" truth. He felt compelled to soften the edges of the family narrative.
