The old trunk in the attic had a distinctive musty scent. Emily, carefully lifting the lid, was greeted by a cascade of faded photographs. One depicted her grandmother, the woman everyone knew as a saint, laughing heartily while dancing with a handsome man who was definitely not her grandfather. The photograph was placed between a torn program for a play and a piece of dried flower.

A knot formed in Emily’s throat as she studied the picture. She'd always imagined her grandmother's life as a perfect, unwavering example of virtue. The picture revealed something far more complex. She thought about her grandmother's sacrifice.

The image seemed to echo with unspoken stories. She carefully put the photograph back in the trunk and took a long breath. She couldn't help but feel a sudden connection with this stranger.
