She noticed the way her mother’s hands trembled slightly as she raised her glass. A flash of memory – a small girl clutching her mother's leg, frightened by a loud noise – overwhelmed her. The tiny tremor was suddenly the weight of all the years.

“Mom,” Sarah began, her voice barely a whisper, “I know this isn't just about celebrating your retirement. It's about… closing a chapter.” She focused on her mother’s eyes, and felt a burning in her own.
