The flickering candlelight illuminated the letter, its ink a faded sepia. James traced his name on the envelope, recognizing the handwriting instantly. It was from his younger self, addressed to his future wife. He found the envelope in an old music box he was rummaging through.

He re-read the letter, his brow furrowing as he witnessed the young man's hopeful, earnest voice. He remembered the boy's insecurities, the way he fumbled with words. He imagined the ache of anticipation, the innocent vulnerability. A hand reached out to him, in the form of a gentle, forgotten love. He felt an unwelcome pang of guilt at seeing the letter, which he felt he had betrayed.
