The cold seeping from the elevator's steel walls felt like a physical pressure on Liam's chest. Emily, sitting across from him, had her arms wrapped around herself, her face tight with suppressed anxiety. He knew she was a recent transplant to the city, didn't have much of a support system.

He remembered her at the office. She always brought snacks to share. She was always the one to offer help when someone was struggling. Now, she was the one in need. He felt a sharp jab of… something, a desire to ease her worry.

"Are you cold?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady. The fluorescent lights buzzed again, a maddening, repetitive sound. He thought about his own jacket, in his office. He glanced at his own light cotton blazer. Not enough. "I think they'll be here soon," he said, and then, as an afterthought, "Have you eaten lunch yet?"
