The emergency light cast a sickly yellow glow on the faces around him. The air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and something metallic. For a moment, the situation felt surreal. As they had been stuck in the box for over an hour now, Tom noticed that Karen was staring at her phone, her brow furrowed. He knew she was having a hard time, as he had overheard her talking to a friend about a recent breakup. He knew her world had felt flipped on its head.

He glanced at her, sensing her internal turmoil. He knew that the only thing that would help her right now was a distraction.

“Do you like magic?” he asked, a mischievous glint in his eye. He then proceeded to remove a handkerchief from his pocket and began clumsily attempting a card trick.
