The hours crawled by. The initial flurry of activity, the frantic button-pushing, the ringing of emergency lines, had faded into a strained quiet. Liam observed Chloe. She'd been surprisingly composed at first, but now, her shoulders were slumped, and her usual bright eyes were shadowed. She’d been speaking to her mom on the phone before the elevator stopped. Liam remembered.

He knew she would be stressing. He found himself thinking about his own mother, her frail health. He knew the feeling of wanting to protect her.

He pushed himself away from the wall. “Hey,” he said quietly, hoping to pull her from her thoughts. “Do you want to talk about… anything? Anything at all.” He then took a steadying breath. "Or not, it's fine too."
