Michael stared at the notice posted on the department’s bulletin board. Professor Ramirez, his guiding light, was accepting a professorship overseas. The words blurred; his mind struggled to process. He remembered the grueling early morning sessions, the demanding critiques, but also the genuine encouragement, the belief she had in his abilities. Now, he wondered, who would push him? Who would even care?

He found himself wandering the halls, past her office door. He wanted to knock, to offer some semblance of support, but his hand hovered uncertainly in the air. The fluorescent lights hummed, amplifying the silence.

He imagined the logistics, packing boxes, saying goodbye to colleagues. He understood the lure of the new opportunity, the allure of the unknown, but he couldn't shake the image of her, already packing her bags. He wanted to go and offer to help.
