“It's not fair,” Liam muttered under his breath, reading the email again. Professor Bell, who had taken him under her wing, was heading to a rival university. Liam felt a strange mix of anger and disappointment. He thought of her dedication, the late nights spent in the lab, the countless revisions they had made to his paper. He felt a deep sense of loss.

He found himself pacing his small apartment, the space suddenly feeling too empty. He pictured her in her new office, surrounded by new students, new challenges. He felt a twinge of guilt, but only because he knew how much this meant to her.

He knew she would be happy, but that didn’t help with the feeling that he was being abandoned.
