The harsh fluorescent light of the hallway seemed to intensify the starkness of the notice clutched in Maya’s hand. The eviction was for Sarah, the young single mother who lived across the hall. The thought of Sarah and her toddler, Liam, on the street brought a lump to Maya’s throat.

She found Sarah sobbing in her apartment, Liam clinging to her legs. Maya, forgetting all her own worries, knelt down. "What can I do?" she asked, her voice soft.
