He hadn't expected to find anything of his mother's in the basement. Robert had always seen his mother as a force of nature. But there it was: a draft resignation letter from her teaching job. He was a teenager at the time. He could faintly remember the discussions, the raised voices. The letter spoke of battles and compromises and a loss of faith in the system. As Robert scanned the words, a deep sadness settled in his chest. He saw her struggles. He saw the person she was, and who she’d wanted to be. He finally understood.
